Juniper is a slightly astringent herb with anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties. Its diuretic effect and its volatile oil content make it a great option for UTIs and bladder infections. The volatile oil can irritate the kidneys if taken for a long period, so it is best taken during acute complaints only. It is sometimes used to treat arthritis and rheumatism due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to clear stagnant energy. Because of its diuretic action, it can relieve muscle aches when they are partially due to excess lactic acid. Juniper features in the folklore of a wide range of peoples, including the Ancient Egyptians and many Native American tribes. It also has ceremonial uses, mostly for protection and cleansing.
